Private Lesson FAQs
Everything You Need to Know about private swimming lessons!
Learning to swim is one of the most important life skills a child can develop, especially living so close to our beautiful Dorset coastline. While group lessons are great for many, some swimmers progress faster and feel more secure with the dedicated focus of a private instructor. Whether you or your child is a complete beginner, needs to overcome a fear of the water, or wants to refine their stroke technique, our private 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 lessons are designed to build confidence at their own pace. Explore our frequently asked questions below to find out how we can help your child dive into their swimming journey.

Can you learn how to swim in one day ?
Swimming is a life skill that is built through confidence, technique and repetition. In one lesson, we can absolutely make progress, but swimming ability develops over time through consistency and practice.
Do you follow a specific swimming award scheme?
Individuality Swimming follows a combination of Swim England Awards and Swimming Teachers Association schemes:
- Ducklings – covers the basic skills needed to swim up to 5 metres.
- Water Skills – a range of badges that build on water safety skills and stroke technique work
- Distance Badges – a progressive range of badges from 5 metres to 3000 metres distance
- Swimming Challenge Badges – a progressive scheme of swimming challenges incorporating distance and survival skills
My child is very nervous and has a phobia of water. Can you help?
Our teachers are highly experienced in supporting nervous swimmers, and we incorporate Aquaphobia training into our lessons and teaching. Individuality is also a member of the Institute of Aquaphobia.
Why is learning to swim so important?
Swimming is a vital life skill that could one day save a life!
In addition to the safety aspect, swimming builds confidence, resilience, coordination and fitness. Swimming stimulates the vestibular system, which controls balance and spatial awareness, and this is directly linked to attention and emotional regulation in younger children.
How many lessons will it take for my child to learn to swim?
Everyone learns at a completely different pace; there is no “normal” timeline. Some people make rapid progress, while others need more time to build confidence and coordination. Stay consistent, trust the journey, and progress will come.
Can we focus on specific skills, like breathing or a particular stroke?
Private lessons are fully personalised and catered to you and your goals. Whether you or your child needs help with breathing, front crawl technique, diving, stamina, or building water confidence, we tailor the session to your goals and work at a pace right for you.
Do I need to get in the water with my child?
Our aim is to build your swimmer’s confidence so they’re ready from the age of 3 years to move into group lessons independently, without a parent in the pool. Our instructors are trained to support nervous swimmers and create a calm, secure environment, so you can relax poolside knowing they’re in safe hands. For swimmers under 3 years we offer a parent-and-preschool class where parents can still join their child in the water.
Are private swimming lessons worth it?
If you want focused attention and lessons tailored exactly to your child or yourself, then yes, they’re absolutely worth it.
In a private lesson, every minute is spent on the swimmer. There are no distractions, no comparison to others, and we can adapt instantly, correct technique, and move at the right pace for the swimmer. We all learn in different ways, and private lessons enable teachers to deliver lessons based on swimmers’ learning styles.
They’re especially valuable for nervous swimmers, children who need a confidence boost, or those wanting to refine specific skills.
How does payment work?
We use monthly direct debits taken on the 1st of each month, where the yearly cost is spread equally across each month.
How do I track my child's progress?
You can track your child’s progress through the home portal system, which is updated weekly by the instructors following the lesson.
Can I watch the lessons?
You are able to watch lessons at all of our venues other than Victoria Education Centre, however we run a watching week every 8 weeks.
Can I do a catch up session?
Unfortuantly we do not offer catch up sessions due to continuity and the booking process. However we are able to make permanent class changes if the time/day/venue no longer suits.
Will my child have the same instructor every week?
We aim for consistency wherever possible and always try to keep your child with the same instructor.
Building a strong relationship between instructor and swimmer is key for both progress and confidence. However, there may occasionally be changes due to sickness or annual leave. When this happens, we ensure a clear handover between teachers so lessons continue smoothly and your child’s progress stays on track.
What should I bring to the lesson?
You will need a swim suit, towel and a swimming hat (free hat provided upon booking on a direct debit). You may also find goggles useful. We will provide all learning equipment. Please visit our shop to purchase hats, goggles etc: https://individualityswimmingandfitness.co.uk/shop/
